NODA by Cynthia Catera

New Year, new discovery. This new year's, we went down to Charlotte, NC to visit a friend who lives in, NODA, an artsy community combining artists and young professionals. I have never eaten so many biscuits and gravy and wings in my entire life, but man, was it worth it! :)

FREEDOM PARK

Arts & Antiques in Portland by Cynthia Catera

Portland has a vast assortment of art and sculpture in and around neighboring towns. From pieces of the Berlin Wall, painted murals, and conversational sculptures, there's something for everyone here.

And with treasures untold, you could spend the whole weekend antiquing....just remember to bring the Uhaul :)

....my favorite, bottom right: The silk printed menu for one of the first vessels to arrive in the new country....truly incredible!!!!

Grounds for Sculpture by Cynthia Catera

On a weekend getaway, on the last of Summer Friday's of 2015, I got the opportunity to discover The Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, New Jersey. With the highly manicured lawns and larger than life sculptures ranging from realistic to abstract, one could get lost for hours in this place. Thankfully if was a gorgeous day outside, and we did just that! :)

Sugar Sugar....Honey Honey....You Are My Candy Girl by Cynthia Catera

It's hard to believe the Domino Sugar Factory will no longer be standing. When I first moved to the city, taking the JMZ had the best (and free) arial views of the skyline. And seeing the Domino Factory perched on the waterfront, had this prestigious essence of what Williamsburg stood for in its industrial prime. And walking through the gutted steel in search of the Sugar Goddess, the chills resonated through my bones of the great history this landmark embarked.

I've always had a knack for natural weathered and oxidized structures. There's this lack of control you have to sacrifice to time and nature to allow such a beautiful process to take place. And not to say that Kara Walker's installation is capable of perusing over. Walker also use this "nature as art" with her civilization of Sugar People, slowly dissolving from the sun, becoming absorbed into the factory....and who's to say the factory isn't absorbing into the land beneath it....was this part of Walker's whole vision in the first place? And beyond the workers, we see the Sugar Goddess watching over her fortress-to see the size in person is outstanding and breathtaking as the intoxicating smell of sugar all around you...soaked into every steel crevasse....

BRAIN RIEGEL by Cynthia Catera

A few week backs, on a trip to Columbus Ohio, I came across the work of Brian Riegel being showcased at the airport. His multi-media sculptures mash-up the likes of instruments, gears, videography, recreating beautiful and conversational pieces. The fine detailing in his etching is also quite spectacular, allowing for you to get lost in his sculptures.
