A Little Inspiration from Catherine Malandrino by Cynthia Catera

CATHERINE MALANDRINO

About a month and 1/2 prior, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to hear Catherine Malandrino speak at work. Being a fanatic of extracurricular activities of lectures and extended learning, I've attended a handful of similar events, some more less thrilling than others. But nonetheless, I was thrilled to meet Malandrino in person. Within minutes, I was captivated. Her poise, wit, and humor held the room for 90 minutes...and we all walked out creatively refreshed and energize.

She starts off with, Clothing is magic...it makes you feel a certain way.

With designing, you never start with the product, it always starts with the EMOTION. Bring the story linked to the clothes.

Malandrino then elaborated and stressed the originality of the product. Where is the emotion behind it? She has 4 GOLDEN RULES OF DESIGN:

1. Don't forget to DREAM

2. FACE YOUR FEARS-tackle them-and don't let them stand in your way

3. Service yourself with LOVE. Be able to FORGIVE & surround yourself with POSITIVE &STRONG PEOPLE. Give the best version of yourself...all the time...this will aid in CREATIVITY

IF YOU CANNOT GIVE WITHIN, YOU CANNOT CREATE

4. Never forget the POWER OF SEDUCTION

Being French, Malandrino suggests that Seduction is far more prevalent her native land, where the POWER OF PRESENTATION is a lost art in the States...that everyone is too efficient (hey NY'ers, does that ring a bell)

Malandrino grew up in the countryside of France and began her career of designing with sketching at the age of 10. Even at this early age, she recognized the POWER OF CLOTHES & DRESSING AS A FORM OF EXPRESSION. And this still resonates in her life today-needing to be seduced by her own design to be able to put it into the world. In her words, "Give the customer something to dream about. This is the essence of human nature."

Beginning in knitwear, and moving into couture, she tosses the ideas around of disposable vs. statement pieces and how, "Clothing is a great tool to build yourself. It must have both the balance of content & great fit."

"As a designer, you must be nourished by the whole world and design for everyone."

Her checklist for good designers:

1. Designers must know their level of CURIOSITY (books, music, travel, where they get their ideas)

2. They must cultivate their own unique qualities.

3. Always reinvent

One of the fantastic memories Malandrino shared was the time she was first introduced to Diane von Furstenberg. At the time, DVF was staying on the top floor of the Carlyle Hotel. Catherine walks in, and Diane is lounging on the chaise, tells Catherine to undress, and put on the infamous wrap dress.

DVF, "How do you feel?"

Malandrino, "I feel like a woman!"

End Scene....and the rest is fashion history.

Malandrino wraps up the lecture stating that it was a bumpy ride to success, but despite the difficulties, always keep positive, don't dwell, and don't waste your time thinking of the hard times....instead, FOCUS ON IMPROVING YOUR ASSETS.

Putting her words to paper, makes me feels just as inspired as the day I heard her speak. Malandrino's words, just as her designs, are timeless in nature.

Designtrepreneurs!!! by Cynthia Catera

designtrepreneurs

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to attend the Designtrepreneur event associated with StartOut and SVA. Moderated by Debbie Millman, this event highlighted the success of those who have found their ways into entrepreneurship, along with their paths, stories, and struggles. Other speakers included Ryan Fitzgibbon, Ben Watson, (and my personal favs) Mary Taylor, and Thomas Page McBee. Brought over from the West Coast, I'm hoping to see many more event as these in the future.

DEVELOPMENT HISTORY
Born as a reaction to California’s passage of Prop 8, the show began development in earnest in late 2010 when Peter Berube (book) established a creative partnership with Aaron Beaumont (music and lyrics).

THE CAUSE
The mission of Behind Closed Doors is to address LGBT rights and social justice: issues at the forefront of current events. The message at the heart of Behind Closed Doors is that silence in the face of injustice means complicity with the status quo. We dream of turning this musical into a nationally touring production, partnering with LGBT organizations to provide support and educational resources for youth, and challenging allies nationwide to speak out.

COME ON OUT AND SHOW YOUR SUPPORT!!!

THE MOTS NOUVEAUX by Cynthia Catera

The Mots Nouveaux are taking NYC by storm!!!

With their Friday night residency at SideWalk Cafe, to their appearances at Rockwood Music Hall, check out the vids below featuring last week's performance at SideWalk.

Their name, meaning "words new",  combines a little rag-time & a little sultry cabaret...all mixed with catchy & melodic pop hooks...........you know the ones you wake up to singing in your head =)

With the dynamic voice of EMMA FITZPATRICK, the magnetic harmonies from AMANDA WALLACE, and the ebony & ivory mastermind of AARON BEAUMONT, this LA to NY band is a force of nature (and talent) taking the NYC music scene to new heights.

Rockwood Music Hall-THIS IS NOT THE RADIO by Cynthia Catera

Sunday night, I found myself sitting in a basement exploding with talent. A music showcase at Rockwood Music Hall has begun every third Sunday of the month, and has to be better than any full-price, big box office artist (but then again I AM a fan of intimate venues.) One after another, each artist was better than the next. The talent, heart, and the soul of each artist resonated so deeply...with such ease and relaxation extending from their pipes.

The event is put on by THIS IS NOT THE RADIO, which is a community of performance artists and musicians coming together to share their art and finding support in a city where it's a struggle for even the finest of artists to get noticed and stage time. Tonight, I got to see THE MOTS NOUVEAUX, LINDSEY LUFF, and AKIE BERMISS

My personal sweet spot is for the MOTS, I may even consider myself a groupie. And who wouldn't.... with front woman EMMA FITZPATRICK, key pounding AARON BEAUMONT, and background vocals from AMANDA WALLACE, this LA group ventured cross-country to build their following on the east coast...and my... are we lucky to have them:) A little rag-time, a little sultry cabaret, mixed with catchy pop hooks, you're likely to fall in love in a moment's time....

THE MOTS NOUVEAUX

Here's a jam from back west....CALIFORNIA

...still not enough? You can catch them at SIDEWALK CAFE on Friday nights!!! (This Friday at 10:30pm)

LINDSEY LUFF

I've always had a soft spot for truthful song-writing, paired with a melodic piano. Throw in a guitar with a beat-ful bass and the trio's complete! THAT VOICE!!!!

AKIE BERMISS

The OTHER piano man....This guy kills it with his playing technique and a voice to match. Bonus points...ending on his personal rendition of "Still the One" by Miss Shania.

FUERZA BRUTA WAYRA by Cynthia Catera

When art, theater, music, and dance meet as one, amazing things emerge. Add some spectacular set design and a conceptualized story-line, you begin to have the creation of Wayra, Fuerza Bruta's second show.

With the show evolving around at you every second, interaction is key with the characters, dancing within the crowd, and the water world ceiling lowering to inches above your head. The movement of the crowd as a living & breathing organism accompanying the show as they move between scenes... And you're always looking as to what is coming next...

My favorite part, since I missed out on the first Fuerza Bruta, was the pool-like ceiling... with the dancers running and diving throughout shallow pools. As I stood underneath, mesmerized by the rippling effects of the water, I watched how the tides progress with their motions and lighting.

A quick show with intense visuals and a conceptual atmosphere-I recommend that everyone checks out this show and steps into the amazing world of Frueza Bruta!
